Format reminder: how 32 of 48 advance
The 2026 World Cup runs twelve groups of four. The top two in each group advance automatically (24 teams), and the eight best third-placed sides join them, making 32 teams in an expanded round of 32. The practical effect: a third-placed finish is often survivable, so being level on points or even pointless after two rounds does not always mean elimination.
