The tie of the day turned on the finest of margins. Ivan Perišić put Croatia ahead on 53 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the penalty spot on 68. With the match seemingly drifting towards extra time, Gonçalo Ramos rose to head home a Rafael Leão cross in the 94th minute — the winner arriving in second-half stoppage time of regulation, not in an extra period. Deep into added time Joško Gvardiol thought he had equalised, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

2.2 Spain 3-0 Austria {#spain-austria}
Spain were ruthless in Inglewood. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring on 36 minutes, Pedro Porro added a second on 66, and Oyarzabal completed his brace on 89. Spain registered 23 shots to Austria’s five and remain the only team at the 2026 World Cup yet to concede a goal.

2.3 Switzerland 2-0 Algeria {#switzerland-algeria}
Switzerland were efficient in Vancouver. Breel Embolo struck early (timed at around the 10th–11th minute across sources) and Rubén Ndoye doubled the lead a minute into the second half. The result carries Switzerland into their fourth successive Round of 16.

- Ronaldo’s knockout first, at 41. Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty was his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match, making him the oldest player to score in the knockout stage of a World Cup.
- Modrić’s last dance. Croatia’s 40-year-old captain Luka Modrić exited what is widely reported as his final World Cup; the match closed with a post-whistle embrace between Modrić and Ronaldo, former Real Madrid teammates.
- Spain still airtight. Spain have not conceded in four matches at the tournament — the only side with a clean sheet across every game so far.
- Switzerland’s streak. A fourth consecutive Round of 16 continues one of the more understated runs of recent World Cups.

The results firmed the Round of 16 to six confirmed pairings out of eight. The marquee addition is Spain vs Portugal (6 July), joining Canada vs Morocco and Paraguay vs France (both 4 July), Brazil vs Norway and Mexico vs England (both 5 July), and USA vs Belgium (6 July).
