Panama vs England — World Cup 2026 Group L Preview
England close their Group L campaign against an already-eliminated Panama at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, 27 June, kicking off at 10:00 pm IST. Thomas Tuchel’s side top the group on four points and need only avoid defeat to be sure of progression, but a frustrating 0-0 with Ghana — a fourth successive tournament in which England have drawn their second match — has kept the pressure on. This preview sets out the team news, the numbers and the group permutations for Irish viewers, with England carrying the usual cross-channel interest.

2. Group L: what’s at stake {#group-l-stakes}
England lead Group L on four points (+2) after a 4-2 win over Croatia and a 0-0 draw with Ghana. Ghana are level on four; Croatia, on three, must beat Ghana in the parallel fixture to go up automatically. Panama, on zero points, are eliminated. England are all but through — a win or a draw confirms a top-two finish and, with it, almost certainly first place on goal difference.

3. Team news {#team-news}
3.1 England {#england-news}
Tuchel is without Reece James, ruled out with a hamstring problem after missing the last two training sessions — and a doubt for the Round of 32 as well. Bukayo Saka is questionable as his achilles is managed, with Madueke a candidate to deputise. On the positive side, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson are fit and available. Rice is one booking from a suspension, so his minutes may be managed.
3.2 Panama {#panama-news}
No injuries or suspensions have been reported in the Panama camp ahead of the match. With elimination already confirmed, the fixture is about pride and finishing the campaign on a positive note.
4. Form, head-to-head and the numbers {#numbers}
The underlying numbers point firmly one way. Opta’s model gives England a 78.5% win probability and an 84.1% chance of topping the group; Panama sit at 8.9% to win. England have generated 6.72 expected goals across their two matches from 41 shots; Panama have managed 1.86 xG and are yet to score.

| Metric | England | Panama |
|---|---|---|
| Last 6 form | W3 D2 L1 | W2 D1 L3 |
| Goals for / against (last 6) | 9 / 4 | 9 / 12 |
| Expected goals (this WC) | 6.72 | 1.86 |
| Opta win probability | 78.5% | 8.9% |
The sides have met once before — England’s 6-1 win at the 2018 World Cup. The gulf in quality and the dead-rubber context for Panama both point to a comfortable England evening, with rotation the only realistic threat to the margin.
5. Conditions at MetLife Stadium {#conditions}
MetLife Stadium is open-air. The forecast for the evening is cloudy with a high near 27°C (80°F) and light winds — comfortable conditions that should not materially affect play. For more on the venue, see our MetLife Stadium guide.
6. Odds and assessment {#odds}
Prices are fractional (Irish primary) with decimal in brackets, from the OddsPortal 1X2 six-book aggregate as of 27 June.
| Selection | Fractional | Decimal | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| England | 1/5 | 1.20 | Short — passage already near-certain |
| Draw | 8/1 | 9.10 | Long |
| Panama | 35/2 | 18.50 | Long |
With England at 1/5, the headline result offers little for value-seekers. The more interesting questions — given likely rotation and the management of Rice and Saka — sit in the goals and margin markets, which is where the price discrepancy against Panama’s defensive record (12 conceded in their last six) is most pronounced.
7. Irish viewing guide {#irish-viewing}
The World Cup is free-to-air in Ireland, shared between RTÉ and Virgin Media, with every RTÉ-broadcast match also streamed live on the RTÉ Player. The 10:00 pm IST kick-off makes this a prime-time watch on Saturday night. England’s matches typically draw a sizeable Irish audience given the cross-channel following, even with the Republic absent from the tournament.
