Cape Verde’s run is the story of the tournament’s early knockout rounds. The Atlantic archipelago, with a population of around 525,000, is the smallest nation by population ever to reach a men’s World Cup knockout stage. They are also the first side to advance from a World Cup group without winning a match since Chile in 1998, having drawn all three group games — against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia — and the first debutant to reach the knockouts since Slovakia in 2010.

The emblem of the run is 40-year-old goalkeeper Josimar Vieira, known as "Vozinha," who made seven saves in the goalless draw with Spain. Cape Verde’s only goals in the group came from Varela and Pina.

Argentina arrive as Group J winners with a perfect record, having conceded just once in the group (goal difference +7). Lionel Messi, at 39, has scored six of Argentina’s eight goals in North America and co-leads the tournament scoring chart. He holds the all-time career World Cup goals record at 19, and co-leads the 2026 Golden Boot race at six goals with Kylian Mbappé, who sits on 18 career goals and is one short of matching him. Argentina have not lost in a long run of matches and start as overwhelming favourites.

• Argentina: Cristian Romero has recovered from a knee knock and returned to full training; Gonzalo Montiel is out with a hamstring issue. (Both items were single-source at the time of writing.)
• Cape Verde: Telmo Arcanjo is out or doubtful with a muscle issue and Jovane Cabral is a knock doubt. Under the 2026 knockout rules, all group-stage yellow cards were wiped before the Round of 32, so no group booking rules any Cape Verde player out.

This is the first competitive meeting between the sides, and Cape Verde’s expected-goals output was not published — their route has been built on organisation and goalkeeping rather than chance creation. Argentina’s blend of a settled defence and Messi’s finishing makes the gulf in quality plain, even against a side that frustrated Spain.

Hard Rock Stadium is open-air with a shading canopy but no full climate control. The Miami forecast for the evening is hot and humid — a high near 33°C (91°F) with a heat index up to about 41°C (105°F) — with a 50% chance of showers or thunderstorms after early afternoon. The 6:00 pm local kick-off and canopy shade should ease the worst of the heat, though a passing storm is possible.

Prices are fractional (Irish primary) with decimal in brackets, from the screen-verified 1X2 aggregate as of 3 July. "1" is an Argentina win in 90 minutes; "X" (level after 90) sends the tie to extra time and penalties.
